Small Bathtub

He is in a small bathtub, facing the the drain,

sitting with his knees up

and his head down between them,

water running from the showerhead onto his neck


HIs limbs are red and white

in the sunlight that breaks into pieces

passing through the transparent curtain.

The sadness is unbearable.

She is


behind him in the tub,

bending at the waist or kneeling.

He cannot see her

     Afterwards, as they lay there together, she said a funny thing. Her head on the blanket on the floor against his hip. His proximate arm thrown back above his head in a crook. She said, sliding up with her blue eyes, kissing his ribs, "You have armpit hair like a woman's." She twined the tips of her fingers there, "Everything else about you is all man, all man, but look at it! Just look!"  He bent his chin down to the clavicle and visually considered his underarm ...
